Little Mermaid Photo Session
Alayna loves mermaids, so when it was time for her next photo session she wanted to be a mermaid. Her mom got her a cute little mermaid swim suit with a matching long skirt that fit perfectly into the theme. The photos were taken an hour before sunset in her back yard around the pool. Pretending to be Ariel from The Little Mermaid was fun as Alayna combed her hair with a fork (just like the character). When the session was over she jumped in the pool because mermaids need to swim. When I got back to my office I culled through the photos and picked a few (it was hard because she is so adorable) to create a fantasy scene using a technique called compositing. A composite is taking photos from other photographs and using them to create a whole new background like the one above. Here are two original photos were taken to create the above picture.
Composite photography is a form of art. Attention to detail is key. The original photos are taken in flat light to minimize shadows. Elements and people are cut out of the original photos in Photoshop very carefully as to not cut out the important detail. A background is created and the elements are brought in separately and placed in the background. Once each element is placed details are added such as color change and shadows. Harsh lines are blended in. This is a time-consuming process and can take several hours to days to complete. The results are magical.
